So the skull-collecting hobby Jani had started a few years a go has turned to a mutual pastime and we go through every possible store with animal parts and curiosities in them. London blew Jani away a couple of years back with its wide array of museums and other peculiar stuff, but NYC seems decent this far also. There’s at least four different spots to recommend straight away with different approaches to the matter.
The biggest location is probably The Evolution Store right off of Broadway in the Village. It’s a scientific take on the matter, mostly concentrating on bones and animals. The staff was eager to help and seemed knowledgable about their selection which is always nice. They’ve got a wide array of replicas, some really nice ready made displays and a bunch of skulls and bones. Even some human things and exploded specimens, which are always the coolest. But on the down side, the prices are midtown high. Some of the smallest skulls are almost in normal ranges, but when it comes to anything bigger, you might be paying three times the regular asking prices.
So go and check the place out for shits and giggles, because they’ve got awesome stuff, but if you’re not a millionaire you can pick up most of the regular stuff cheaper from almost anywhere. Some of their bigger specialty items are insanely awesome, so if you’ve got the money, do go for the fossil cave bear bones or exploded crustaceans. But for us working a normal day job, just prancing around dreaming is a good hour to spend.
The next thing that comes up every time oddities and NYC are mentioned is the Morbid Anatomy Museum. The entry hall already has enough to see to justify a visit to this Gowanus spot. They’ve taken a lighter approach then the Evolution store, with fun stuff like bunny butt mounts, crab ducklings and Jackalope skeletons. These novelty items aren’t even priced that badly, considering there’s some extra effort and humour behind them. Although most of the stuff seems so tender, they’d be a bitch to smuggle back to Finland…
Morbid Anatomy Museums main event is supposedly the changing exhibition upstairs, which cost 8 dollars when we visited. Unfortunately at least this time it wasn’t worth the money. They had a “collectors cabinet” exhibit with stuff from peoples personal collections on display. Some really interesting things as you can see in the pictures below, but somehow it didn’t seem worth the 8 bucks after all the stuff you could just spot in the lobby for free.
Morbid Anatomy Museum also supports a variety of events you can participate in. Last Sunday they had an oddities flea market which was nice. A little shy of ten vendors with books, clothing, jewelry, taxidermy, skulls and oddities. We didn’t end up buying anything as the most interesting things were the wet specimens Jani has planned to start making himself anyhow. Who wouldn’t need octopus tentacles in a jar? They’ve also got a bunch of taxidermy classes (which seem to be fairly hard to get in to because of the amounts of interested participants) and lectures on interesting matters like a series of occult music ones coming up. More on those if we get to join in the fun.
The third bigger place to visit is called Obscura Antiques and Oddities in the East Village. They have some nice skulls in their collection but have actually pushed the boundaries more towards what the name implies. They’ve got some crazy shit going on in the store and when you consider the size of their store it’s amazing how much interesting stuff they’ve managed to cram in there. Obscura Antiques & Oddities is probably the spot you most need to see for yourself, because it’s hard to explain the thing they’ve got going on. They carry everything from vintage toys and pictures of dead people to stuffed animals and shrunken heads.
The prices are of course high, because of the location, but 900 bucks for a giraffe skull isn’t too bad, nor is 200 dollars for a bear skull. If Jani’s memory servers him right a giraffe skull in London was around 3000€. And the nicest thing about Obscura Antiques and Oddities is the staff. They are extremely helpful, fine with you just going through the stuff and not even buying anything, and they posses a huge amount of info on anything in the store and even more. We acquired some good tips for possible future endeavors when it comes to skull and skeleton displays.
The last one, the hidden gem on the list is Triple Diamond Tattoo in Gowanus. A small tattoo shop that actually supports almost more oddities than the Morbid Anatomy Museum had! Some of the stuff is for sale, but some is just there to show off. One of the owners, Jon Jon, had actually made some of the exploded specimens at the shop (a skill Jani would be more than eager to learn…) With some jewelry there, and a bunch of smaller objects on sale for a very decent price, it’s actually the spot where we’d recommend to buy stuff from. And of course the whole outlook of the store is just home-like to two weird shit enthusiast like ourselves. Everything is done in a good taste and the collection includes interesting objects to marvel for more visits then one.
And there’s always something soothing in the constant buzzing of a tattoo needle. So if you get lucky, there might be a cheap as hell friday the 13th burning church -tattoo waiting for you too!

Janin kallojenkeräilyharrastus on hiljalleen paisunut yhteiseksi ajanviettotavaksi. Käydään siis nykyään kaikki mahdolliset eläinten palasia ja muuta kummaa myyvät kaupat läpi. Lontoo oli asian tiimoilta melko lyömätön mesta ainakin museoiden puolesta, mutta New York vaikuttaa myös ihan hyvältä. Toistaiseksi on löytynyt neljä hyvää kohdetta joilla on kaikilla hieman eri lähestymistapa.
Isoin lienee keskustassa sijaitseva Evolution Store. Siellä ollaan selvästi liikkeellä tieteen nimissä. Avulias henkilökunta tietää mitä on esillä ja on valmiina jeesaamaan. Tarjolla on iso kokoelma luita ja kalloja, sekä valettuja kopioita ja muuta omituista. Ihmisenluita ja osiin jaettuja kallojakin on myynnissä, mutta valitettavasti hinnat ovat uskomattoman korkealla. Keskikaupungin ryöstöhinnoilla ostosten tekeminen ei varsinaisesti lämmitä. Mutta jos satut olemaan miljonääri ovat isommat esineet todella harvinaisia ja tyylikkäitä – luolakarhun fossiililuut ja osiin jaetut valtavat äyriäiset ovat toki äärimmäisen hienoja, mutta hinnat ovat useita tuhansia.
Seuraava kohde jonka internetistä löytyy kun puhutaan New Yorkin kummallisuuksista on Morbid Anatomy -museo. Jo pelkästään eteisaulan näyttelyn takia kannattaa vaivautua paikalle. Lähestymistapa on selvästi kevyempi kuin Evolution Storessa ja nähtävillä on erimerkiksi jäniksenpersiistä tehtyjä seinätauluja, ravun ja ankanpoikasen yhdistelmä sekä Jackalopen luuranko. Hinnat eivät ole nousseet täysin kohtuuttomiksi, luultavasti Brooklynissä olevan sijainnin takia. Hauskoihin esineisiin on panostettu hieman extraa jolloin ne saattaisivat sopia myös hieman vähemmän kummalisuuksiin kallellaan oleviin koteihin, mutta vaikea noin pikkutarkkoja ja herkkiä esineitä on Suomeen ehjänä saada.
Morbid Anatomy museolla on tarjolla myös erinäisiä tapahtumia joihin yleisö voi osallistua. Sunnuntaina meneillään oli kirpputori jossa ihmiset kauppasivat kaikkea kirjoista vaatteisiin ja pääkalloista säilöttyihin näytteisiin. Shoppailemaan emme tällä kertaa alkaneet sillä kiinnostavimmat asiat olivat juuri niitä mitä on tarkoitus alkaa muutenkin itse tehdä. Koska kyllä mustekalan lonkeroita pitää ihmisellä lasipurkissa olla! Tarjolla on myös eläintentäyttötyöpajoja jotka ovat usein täyteen bookattuina reilusti etukäteen ja luentoja erilaisista kiinnostavista asioista kuten okkultismiin liitetystä musiikista. Lisää näistä jos päästään osallistumaan!
Kolmas isompi putiikki on East Villagessa sijaitseva Obscure Antiques & Oddities jolla on ilmeisesti oma televisiosarjakin. Kokoelmasta löytyy kalloja ja luita reilusti, mutta toki myös muuta nimen antaman osviitan mukaan paikalle haalittua tavaraa. Itse kauppa on melko pieni, mutta se on saatu ympättyä täyteen kiinnostavia esineitä joita jaksaa tutkia useammankin vierailun. Kannattaa mennä paikan päälle penkomaan sillä tavaran määrä ja laatu on sen sorttin, että tarkan kuvailun antaminen kirjallisesti on lähes mahdotonta. Vanhoja leluja, kuolleiden ihmisten kuvia, täytettyjä eläimiä ja kutistettuja ihmisen päitä. Kaikkea mitä leikki-ikäinen nuorimies/nainen tarvitsee kotiinsa.
Hinnat ovat toki melko korkealla, johtuen putiikin sijainnista, mutta 900 euroa kirahvin kallosta on itse asiassa huomattavasti halvempaa kuin esimerkiksi Lontoossa. Ja 200 dollaria karhun kallosta on jo todella kiinnostava tarjous. Henkilökunta oli jälleen kerran todella taitavaa ja avuliasta. Asioiden hiplaaminen omatoimisesti oli täysin sallittua ja kaiken taustoista on tarkkaa tietoa. Jopa apu omiin kallo/luurankoprojekteihin onnistui vaikkei ostoaikeissa oltukaan.
Viimeisenä helmenä on pakko mainita lähes Morbid Anatomy museon naapurissa sijainnut Triple Diamond Tattoo. Pieni tatuointipulju joka piti sisällään lähes saman verran kummallista tavaraa kuin Morbid Anatomy museokin. Osa tavarasta oli myynnissä, osa vain näytillä. Yksi omistajista oli jopa tehnyt itse paloihin hajotettuja kalloja, mikä toki taitona kiinnosti myös Jania. Tarjolla oli myös koruja, sekä hyvin kohtuuhintaisia pienempiä kalloja. Jos siis ostoksille meinaatte niin täältä on hyvä aloittaa. Lisäksi kaupan kokonaisuus ja tyylikäs ulkoasu mielyttivät toki silmää. Tatuointikoneen hurinassa on aina jotain rauhottavaa ja jos käy tuuri saattaa esim. 13. perjantain kunniaksi tatuointikin irrota todella halvalla.
