The man, the myth & the beard!

Went to see Ben Caplan live two nights in a row,, first at Piano’s and then at Rockwood Music Hall. And for a clear reason, the man’s talented as hell! With just a duo Ben and his accompanying drummer/glockenspielist Jamie Kronick were able to fill the stage perfectly. Ben handled both the piano and the guitar with annoying virtuosity when watched by a guy who can barely play Ironman on bass nowadays. And it’s not an easy thing to get a duo to sound as full as these guys did, especially when the other instrument is drums. Ben’s last four years have been spent on the road, and he actually said the hotel rooms are starting to feel like home. So the level of expertise you get after playing 10 months a year for four years in a row, makes every little detail of his playing pretty damn cool to watch.
These guys on the other hand had only played together for less than a month, which is pretty unbelievable considering how good they communicated together. The setlists vary every night, said Jamie, which keeps it interesting for the band. Mr. Caplan just might come up with something that was not planned on the spot and mr. Kronick has no problem keeping up. And the joy on their faces radiates straight to the audience. When that happiness is topped of with a bunch of little musical tricks the guys have up their sleeves, the set should be a must see for everyone who enjoys good music.
Oh yeah, and then there’s the stand-up comedy side between the tunes. Ben went on about the awkward silence in the room (7p.m. on a tuesday…), and seemed to enjoy it, taking it to the point where even the audience had to notice the comedy in it. And still on top of that there was even a glockenspiel solo! That shit was tight! And it seemed to take the audience and the band surprise. And they even handed out candy cigarettes! What’s not to like?!
So hopefully when they hit Europe next time, we’ll get to see Mr. Caplan & co. in Finland too!
Kaksi iltaa Ben Caplania putkeen on äärimmäisen pätevä aloitus viikolle. Oli nimittäin sen sortin soittoveikko että oksat pois. Duona rumpali/kellopelistin kanssa sällit otti lavan haltuun ilman ongelmia. Caplanin ukko veivasi sekä pianoa että kitaraa siihen malliin, että entistä basistia hirvitti. Toisaalta mies on ollut 10 kuukautta vuodesta tien päällä nyt jo neljä vuotta putkeen, joten voidaan olettaa että homman pitäisi sujua.
Nämä kyseiset jätkät olivat tosin veivanneet yhdessä vasta vajaan kuukauden, mutta kommunikaatio pelasi silti täydellisesti. Settilistaa muuteltiin lennosta ja soittamisen ilo välittyi pakolla myös yleisöön. Musiikillisesti homma oli täynnä pieniä kikkoja kummallisista tauoista tarkoituksellisiin “vääriin” ääniin, joten jos on mahdollista mennä katsomaan herrojen touhuja, suosittelen varauksetta!
Välispiikit olivat taattua stand-up komiikkaa, kun ilta seitsemältä hipihiljainen yleisö antoi miehen vaihtaa soittimia niin että nuppineulan tippuminen olisi ollut meteliä, tarttui Caplan aiheeseen välittömästi. Loppuillan hiljaisuudet olivatkin sitten vaivaannuttavuudessaan äärimmäisen hilpeitä. Päälle vielä tappava kellopelisoolo joka tuntui yllättävän jopa soittajansa, sekä yleisölle jaetut karkkitupakat ja voidaan puhua melko täydellisesti konserttielämyksestä!
Seuraavaan Euroopan-kiertueeseen yhdistetystä Suomen vierailusta oli jo puhetta.
